Fino al 1956 non esistevano strade per Kathmandu, tutto era portato sulle spalle dei portatori. Anche le macchine.
Nelle foto la prima Mercedes donata da Hitler a Re Tribhuvan nel 1940, poi cambiata con una nuova (Bentley) negli anni ’50. Poi, con la strada, sono arrivate le prime macchine (come la strana #BMW anni ’60), i taxi tigrati (anni ’70), le Toyota scassate (anni ’80). Infine le strade della città sono scoppiate per il boom economico degli anni ’90.
Nel 1989 c’era una macchina ogni 1000 abitanti, oggi ce ne sono 10. La grande maggioranza nella Valle di Kathmandu.
Before the road linking Kathmandu to the Indian border was built in 1956, cars used to be carried by hand. The first car was introduced in the time of King Surendra (1881-1911) more than a hundred years ago. Catering mainly to the Rana or Shah families, cars brought from India would be driven up to Bhimphedi and then carried by a group of porters along the #Bhimphedi-Chitlang-#Thankot route.
